NHS West London and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust are raising awareness for their targeted lung screening programme on pharmacy bags. The programme is for people aged between 55 and 74 who have ever smoked. The check is quick, simple, and a good way of spotting lung-related problems early on, possibly before people even notice anything.
This free NHS service is currently available for patients across Croydon, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Merton, Sutton, and Wandsworth. They will be coming soon to Brent, Harrow, Kensington & Chelsea, Kingston, Richmond, and Westminster.
Pharmacy Bags are an effective prompt, as not every person with a history of smoking makes their GP aware of this, and so would not automatically get invited to be screened. The bags are placed directly into the hands of people collecting medication from pharmacies within the boroughs, providing the opportunity to ask a trained healthcare professional about the message on the bag. 67% of 65-74 year olds visit a pharmacy once a month or more, as do 57% of 75+ years.
